Slubgrip Instructs is the sequel to Fr Longenecker’s successful book The Gargoyle Code. In The Gargoyle Code master tempter Slubgrip writes daily to trainee devil Dogwart–advising him on the temptation of a confused young Catholic, while he struggles to control his own ‘patient’–an older man who is facing a serious illness. Having been betrayed and sent down, Slubgrip now finds himself sentenced to teach Popular Culture 101 at Bowelbages University. His lectures and meetings, and those of his collection of fiendish guest lecturers are recorded by the security division at Bowelbages and the transcripts comprise the manuscript of Slubgrip Instructs. Slubgrip’s lectures take the reader through the whole range of the temptations in popular culture that undermine the Catholic faith. While busy teaching and bullying his students, Slubgrip has his eye on toppling President Thornblade and his old enemies–Commissioner Crasston and head of Detention, the tempter Snozzle. Will Slubgrip’s coup succeed or will he receive yet another “invitation to dinner down below”?

Slubgrip Instructs Fifty Days with the Devil Dwight Longenecker 9780986271304 Books

I read this book day by day during Lent as it is set up. It is written ala The Screwtape Letters, but in this book the demon Slubgrip is a college professor in hell instructing the newbies. It has a lot of value and shows how the devils work on us in so many ways. My one objection would be the reading time taken by Slubgrip scheming to overtake a bigger position in hell. My time would have better spent learning more about the author's main intention which is to show how Satan and his minions are constantly at work trying to get our souls. It was a worthwhile book for readers from high school age to any adult seeking spiritual instruction, but not on a very deep level.

Slubgrip Instructs Fifty Days with the Devil Dwight Longenecker 9780986271304 Books Reviews

I love Fr. Longenecker's articles very much, but this book was very boring.......I tried, but gave up after about 35 pages. He tries hard to write another "Screwtape Letters" -- with no success. I will continue to read his WONDERFUL articles on New Advent, those are First Class!!
Very instructive. Let me see why our culture is so twisted. Also very humorous, not a dark and frightening concept to be in Devil School, at all.
Okay but not what I expected. Learned stuff. Won't read next year however. Good commentary on society. Glad it is done.
This is even better than the first one. Would read again! Read it in one sitting because couldn't put it down. Would be a great drama too. Serious but humorous.
It's good for the most part (though I think his "Gargoyle Code" was better for a Lenten devotion). One thing the reader (and the author) should be aware of is the type is very small which makes it harder to read.
Slubgrip Instructs tries to follow in the footsteps of C.S. Lewis's masterpiece, "The Screwtape Letters". In that it shows a demon trying to teach other demons how to win souls for Satan, it does a passable job. However, Slubgrip, Snort, Grimwort, etc. are all extremely two dimensional in nature and the book relies heavily on stereotypes without bothering to do the research (and it shows). For instance, the speech he gives about higher education being there to lure people to the Devil is almost exactly the same one I received as a young Baptist in my senior year of high school, but studies show that earning a college degree has no impact at the BA/BS level on a person's religious devotion overall.

Another glaring issue is Father Longenecker's desperate need for an editor...the second week of Lent is a mess. There is no Wednesday, there are two Fridays, and the days aren't in order. All in all, I want to like this book. I loved The Screwtape Letters. However, the poor editing, heavy reliance on stereotypes, complete ripoffs of characters wholesale (the guest lecturer on money and greed being good is Gecko and has the speech patterns of the fictional Gordon Gecko), and the two dimensionality of everyone is making the reading of this book a true Lenten penance.
A great sequel to the Gargoyle Code. I don't know how you can have so many despicable characters that your enjoy reading about. Great way to open your eyes to the presences of the devil in his attempt to send us to hell. I enjoyed the read.
